Thyroid Surgery
Thyroid surgery is sometimes necessary as an essential part of your thyroid health. In some cases, the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland is necessary.

The physicians at the Thyroid & Endocrine Center of Florida can guide you through each step of the thyroid surgery process.
There are several scenarios in which thyroid surgery may be recommended including:
  • Biopsy showing thyroid cancer or highly suggestive of thyroid cancer
  • Enlarged benign thyroid nodules causing problems with breathing, swallowing, speaking or other pressure symptoms
  • Hyperthyroidism due to overactive nodules or in select cases, Graves’ Disease
  • To make a definitive diagnosis in situations of “indeterminate” FNA biopsy
Prior to surgery for a suspected diagnosis of thyroid cancer, it is essential to have a complete neck ultrasound performed by a certified specialist in order to identify any abnormal lymph nodes in the surrounding area. Our office is one of the few medical practices in the nation accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) for thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound. All our physicians are Endocrine Certified in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU). The ECNU credential certifies that an Endocrinologist displays a high level of competence in diagnostic and interventional neck ultrasound. All ultrasound exams are performed in our office by physicians.
Once we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of surgery with you, a referral will be made for a surgical consultation.

To provide the best possible care for our patients, our office does not collaborate with one particular surgeon or surgical group.

We review each individual’s case and make surgeon recommendations based on the unique circumstances for which surgery is being considered.

The Sarasota area has many highly qualified surgeons who have a significant level of thyroid surgery expertise to whom we will refer. In some cases however, we may suggest traveling elsewhere in the state or country for highly specialized surgical care.

As dedicated thyroid clinicians we have close contacts with the nation’s foremost medical and surgical experts.

For our international patients, we can assist with a referral to a surgeon in your home country or geographic region of preference.

The decision to undergo thyroid surgery is a significant one. The role of the Thyroidologist is to determine the indication for surgery, extent of surgery and help select the best surgeon for your case.
